Nepal Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Improvement Project

Nepal Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Improvement Project

The development objectives of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Improvement Project for Nepal are to: (i) increase sustainable access to improved water services and promote improved sanitation and hygiene practices in rural areas; and (ii) develop and implement a long-term support mechanism to promote the sustainability of water supply schemes in selected districts.

The project comprises of four components. The first component, access to improved water supply and sanitation and promotion of improved sanitation and hygiene practices will finance carrying out a program of selection, development, and implementation of schemes. The second component, district level institutional strengthening will promote the long term sustainability of schemes in selected districts through enhancing institutional arrangements and strengthening linkages among key agencies during planning, implementation, and post construction of such schemes. The third component, technical assistance and capacity building, and project management will finance incremental project management and administration costs for components one and two, as well as a variety of financial and safeguards audits, miscellaneous capacity building activities, and sector studies. The fourth component, contingency emergency response will draw resources from the unallocated expenditure category and or enable the government to request the Bank to re-categorize and reallocate financing from other project components to partially cover emergency response and recovery costs.
